Back to work

It's back to work for Domek. The place was opened up again. I did a cold power up of the house. That is everything was off and I had to go through a check list to make sure I did not power on the Hot Water heater before the Water pump. And the heat before the water pump.

Heat came on fine. Water pump...well. I never had it off for a long period of time so I did not know what to expect. I powered up the pump, nothing. I tried again, nothing, again....uh oh. Well I did a few other things. Then I decided to get a bucket of water from the lake for flushing the toilet, but I power on the water pump first. I ran down to lake to fetch a pail of water, but upon return I found water on the floor. Well the pump worked but a pipe burst. Unfortunately it was in a wall and I had to pull out drywall to get to the leak.

What happened was a pipe came loose at a joint. I resoldered it and tried again. I mostly fixed that leak. Suddenly I was getting hit by water from above. Well a Hot water supply line burst, water everywhere.... Well no water for the first night.

Early in the morning I drove to my second home, Home Depot that is, and bought enough copper tubing, elbows, t-connectors, straight through connectors and valves to total redo the plumbing in the house. I also picked up the new cabinets for the bathroom remodel.

I returned and repaired the 2 broken pipes. All was well but the one in the wall still leaked. I was not worried about that I wanted to make sure we did not have a larger leak anywhere else. Which we did not.

Later I looked at the small leak left in the wall. I traced the pipes and thought I had another broken pipe in the wall. So I quickly shutoff the water. Cut the pipe above the major leak and capped it. Only to find the pipe went to no where....what was my Dad think when he put that in?

I decided to do a Home Inspection of the house. I went through the Garage, found on outlet with an open ground. I went through the attic, found that the vent for the microwave over vents into the attic. I went through the upstairs for the house and found nothing major. No leaks, no nothing.

I stopped at the upstairs. I need to finish up on the basement, elecrical and plumbing.... But I decided to start on the bathroom remodel.

I started with the removal of the sink and countertop. So I needed to shutoff the valves for the sink supply lines, located under the sink.... Well the supply line that goes from teh valve to the fixture was in the way, so I moved it very slightly. That is when all hell broke loose, the line broke at the fixture and I had very hot water being dumped everywhere.

I called for Susan. I asked her to hold her finger over the leak until I could shut off the water. We had water everywhere! I finally got the valve closed. This was just a problem waiting to happen, I am glad it broke while we where there. I blame it on the builder!

Next trip. Bathroom remodel. Make that extreme bathroom remodel! 9 days, 4 unsuspecting relatives, 1 dog and 1 bathroom. Stay tuned for daily updates.

I trust this plumbing situation is COMPLETELY fixed otherwise let me know if I have to order a Port-O-Let though we can go back to the old days of doing our business. Watch out for rattlesnakes though. With enough Maker's Mark that Bathroom will be done in 2 days. Pennington would be proud, especially when I add my special touches in the middle of the night.
